Sunny Deol's Partition drama cleared by CBFC; set for August 14 release

Sunny Deol’s upcoming historical drama, Batwara 1947, has received the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) clearance without any mandatory cuts, paving the way for its scheduled theatrical release on India’s Independence Day, 14 August. The film, directed by Rajkumar Santoshi and produced by Aamir Khan Productions, is set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition and follows a Muslim family that takes residence in an abandoned Hindu home in Lahore.

The story, adapted from the acclaimed play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai by playwright Asghar Wajahat, centres on an elderly Hindu woman who refuses to leave her ancestral house. Her stubborn stance creates tension and ultimately leads to a bond between the two families, highlighting themes of hope and reconciliation during one of history’s darkest chapters.

In the film, Sunny Deol portrays the patriarch of the Mohajir family, while Shabana Azmi plays the steadfast Hindu woman. The cast also includes Preity Zinta—marking her return to cinema after more than five years—alongside Karan Deol, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh, Khushi Hajare, and Kanikka Kapur. The music, composed by A.R. Rahman with lyrics by Javed Akhtar, adds an emotional layer to the narrative.

Following the CBFC’s approval, the makers unveiled a new poster featuring an idol of Lord Krishna holding a lit diya against the Partition backdrop. The poster’s tagline reads, “When the world chose sides, HE chose dharma. Watch Batwara 1947 in cinemas this Partition Day, 14th August.” This release date underscores the film’s intention to resonate with audiences on a day of national significance.

With the certification secured, Batwara 1947 is set to hit screens on 14 August, offering viewers a cinematic exploration of Partition-era struggles, interfaith dialogue, and the enduring human spirit.
