In a move that has fans of the late pop icon eagerly anticipating a new way to revisit his story, the biographical drama "Michael" has confirmed that it will launch on the Indian OTT platform JioHotstar on August 29. The film, which first opened in theatres in April, had previously been available for rental on Amazon Prime Video before its streaming debut.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua and penned by screenwriter John Logan, the movie chronicles the early life and meteoric rise of Michael Jackson from the 1960s through the 1980s. It follows the journey of the boy who would become the King of Pop, with Juliano Valdi playing the younger version of the legend and Jaafar Jackson—Michael’s nephew—taking on the title role. The cast also features Nia Long, KeiLyn Durrel Jones, Laura Harrier, Jessica Sula, Mike Myers, Miles Teller and Colman Domingo in key supporting parts.
"Michael" performed strongly at the box office, earning ₹54 crore in India and a staggering ₹9,500 crore worldwide. The film made history as the first Hollywood biopic to cross the $1 billion threshold globally, cementing its place among recent Hollywood blockbusters.
While critics praised the performances and the soundtrack, some viewers felt the film only skimmed the surface of Jackson’s extraordinary life. The filmmakers have clarified that the narrative was intentionally focused on his ascent to worldwide superstardom rather than attempting to cover every facet of his career and personal life.
With its August 29 launch on JioHotstar, fans in India can now stream the film at home, joining global audiences who have already seen the cinematic tribute to one of music’s most iconic figures.
