Thalapathy Vijay’s final cinematic outing, Jana Nayagan, hit theaters on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, after a protracted certification delay that had fans and critics alike buzzing. The political action drama, helmed by H Vinoth, assembled a high‑profile ensemble that includes Bobby Deol, Pooja Hegde, and Mamitha Baiju, joined by veteran actors Nassar, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Narain, and Priyamani.
More than just a film, Jana Nayagan marks Vijay’s last appearance on the silver screen before he fully commits to a political career and ultimately ascends to the office of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. The movie is also notable for being the second time a sitting chief minister has starred in a film since the 1977 classic Meenava Nanban featuring M. G. Ramachandran.
The release was launched in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi, and it opened to a strong weekend run, buoyed by the star power of Vijay and the buzz surrounding his transition to politics. However, the first Monday after the release saw a sharp decline in footfall, with morning show occupancy dropping to just 19.08% as reported by Sacnilk.
Financially, the film earned ₹10.15 cr on day five (the first Monday). Analysts predict a modest hold for the following day, estimating a day‑six collection between ₹8–10 cr. By 1 pm on Tuesday, the total gross had reached ₹136.23 cr, leaving the film still a few crores shy of the ₹150 cr threshold.
Director H Vinoth praised Vijay, now the chief minister, in an interview with NDTV, saying, “He has very good intentions. When he speaks about social and political issues like women’s empowerment, women’s safety, and corruption, he genuinely believes in what he is saying and wants to do good for the people.”
