Suriya on lasting relationships; mutual respect key to enduring love

Tamil film star Suriya delivered a heartfelt speech on love and marriage at the audio launch of his forthcoming Telugu‑Tamil bilingual feature, "Viswanath and Sons," directed by Venky Atluri. Speaking to a packed audience, the actor urged young men to view love as a lifelong commitment that should not wane after the wedding ceremony. "Love should always endure," he said. "It isn’t something that exists only before marriage or until the wedding ceremony. You should love your partner every day. Even after 20 years, you should still be in love, continue caring for them and continue respecting them," Suriya added.

He explained that while people inevitably change as they grow older—shifting priorities, mindsets and life goals—true affection for a partner must remain constant. "We all change. Our priorities, mindset and purpose in life evolve with time. But the love you have for your partner should never change," he emphasized. Suriya also highlighted that respect for women is even more vital than love itself, noting that women often shoulder greater responsibilities and make significant sacrifices for their families. "More than love, give them respect. Don't just salute their achievements ten times over, salute them a hundred times. Support them in every way possible," he urged.

The actor’s remarks echo his own experience with wife Jyotika, one of South India’s most admired couples. The pair first met on the set of "Poovellam Kettuppar" in 1999, where Suriya helped Jyotika learn Tamil. Their friendship blossomed into romance during the production of the 2003 blockbuster "Kaakha Kaakha," and they later starred together in films such as "Perazhagan" and "Sillunu Oru Kaadhal." They married on September 11, 2006, and after a brief hiatus to focus on family, Jyotika returned to the screen with "36 Vayadhinile" in 2015, a comeback that Suriya publicly supported.

Today, the couple—parents to children Diya and Dev—continue to be celebrated as one of the industry’s most enduring partnerships. Suriya will next appear opposite Mamitha Baiju in "Viswanath and Sons," a film slated for release in both Telugu and Tamil markets.
