Awarapan 2 Gets U/A 16+ Certificate; Minimal Cuts Made

Just over a week remains until the highly anticipated release of Awarapan 2, the sequel to the popular romantic thriller that has left audiences eager for more. The film, starring Emraan Hashmi, Disha Patani, Shabana Azmi and others, is set to hit Indian cinemas on 14 August. Its pre‑release buzz is fueled by the strong recall of the first installment, the star‑packed cast, the promise of an engaging soundtrack and the potential for chart‑topping songs.

The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has granted the film a U/A 16+ certificate, allowing viewers aged 16 and above to watch it with parental guidance. The board’s examining committee, however, requested a handful of edits before approving the certificate. These changes were minimal but aimed at ensuring compliance with the latest censorship guidelines.

First, the filmmakers were asked to add a disclaimer about drug use and child trafficking, as well as a similar ticker for smoking scenes. The CBFC also required a Hindi version of the film title to be displayed, in line with rules that have been in force since 2021. In scenes depicting drug consumption, a bottom‑right corner anti‑drug ticker was mandated.

Audio and subtitles were instructed to replace any “obscene” words. The committee also demanded a 50% reduction in a violent scene that occurs in the second half of the movie. Additionally, three separate instances of extreme violence were to be cut entirely, and a mid‑movie scene showing a character snorting drugs was removed. Once these adjustments were made, the film was cleared on 5 August and its certified running time was listed as 140.20 minutes (2 hours, 20 minutes, and 20 seconds).

Unlike most Hindi releases of the season, Awarapan 2 is the sole film that has avoided an ‘A’ rating. It stands in contrast to Batwara 1947, which received an ‘A’ certificate, and precedes the upcoming releases of Toxic (26 August) and Mirzapur The Movie (4 September), both of which are expected to carry ‘A’ ratings.
