Rupali Ganguly sparks backlash with PM Modi remark; internet schools 'Monisha beta'

Actor‑turned‑BJP politician Rupali Ganguly has ignited a storm on social media after a series of posts that many viewers deemed disrespectful toward Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The controversy began when Ganguly, who has a background in journalism and has worked with outlets such as The Times of India, shared a video on Instagram Reels that featured a minor encouraging viewers to “slap” Modi instead of simply “abusing” him. In the clip, the girl even uses a slipper to simulate a strike on the PM’s picture. Ganguly later added a caption that read, “Insulting the PM like this must have repercussions!!! I really wish he was a dictator!!!”

In a further escalation, Ganguly reposted a message that compared the situation to the recent arrest of Tamil Nadu actor Udhayanidhi Stalin. Udhayanidhi was detained by police after making remarks about actors Vijay and Trisha Krishnan that were deemed offensive. The repost included the line, “Saar Narendra Modi is dictator saar,” and implied that the PM’s treatment of critics should mirror that of Udhayanidhi. The post was shared by an X user who claimed a girl who had abused the PM was “forgiven,” and the comment was later echoed by Ganguly.

The backlash grew as netizens called out Ganguly’s remarks. One user wrote, “Awŵ Ru pa li. Aap itna neechay kaise stoop kar leti hain. Aap actor na toh acting karein. Kya dalaali mein phaas gayi. Our future politician in making (Rupali, how can you stoop so low? Stick to acting, why are you getting involved in this?)” Another comment decried the call for a dictatorship, noting that “Monisha beta inciting hate against 12 year old girls is too fascist.” A further comment urged readers to study history, citing Mussolini, Nazis, and Idi Amin as examples of the dangers of dictatorship.

Some commenters even likened Ganguly to “the next Smriti Irani” for her political stance, while others pointed out the reality of living under a dictatorial regime. Despite the flood of criticism, Ganguly has not yet responded publicly to the uproar. The incident comes amid a broader wave of student protests over NEET and other exam leaks, which have sparked a surge of Reels criticizing Modi and prompting celebrities to urge respectful language toward the Prime Minister.
