Usha Nadkarni Unfazed by Loneliness at 80; Living Alone Since 1987

For almost seventy years, Usha Nadkarni has captivated audiences with her work in Marathi and Hindi cinema, television, and theatre. Though many remember her as Savita Deshmukh from the popular serial Pavitra Rishta, the actress’s personal journey has been shaped by loss, difficult choices, and remarkable resilience. Now 80, she continues to live her life with the same poise that has defined her career.

In a recent interview with Rajshri Marathi, Nadkarni spoke candidly about her long‑standing habit of living alone in Mumbai. She has been single‑occupancy since 1987, a decision that followed the passing of all her siblings and the relocation of her son abroad. When asked whether loneliness ever haunts her, she replied, “I’m used to it. I’ve been living alone since 1987. I’m not scared at all.” She recalled the early days of moving into her building, when she would ask the guard to escort her to the door because she feared an attacker might approach from behind. “But I’m not scared anymore,” she added.

She also reflected on the ever‑present thought of death that comes with solitary living, yet she says it never induces fear. “People can’t tell how they’ll die. Some people go in their sleep, some die in the hospital. I’m not scared even one bit,” she said. “If I die in my sleep, my neighbours would come knocking and think, ‘Buddhi ne darwaza nahi khola hai’ (The old lady didn’t open the door).”

Nadkarni’s career has demanded many personal sacrifices. She has spoken about divorcing her husband years ago but maintains no resentment toward him or his family, even inviting the Nadkarni family to dinner on several occasions. The most painful loss, however, was being absent from her son’s childhood. During the height of her Marathi theatre career, she performed almost daily and sometimes in multiple plays in a single day, making it impossible to be present for her son.

Beyond her long‑standing roles in film and television, Nadkarni has remained active in reality television. She was one of the oldest contestants on Bigg Boss Marathi in 2018 and later appeared on the 2025 cooking show Celebrity Masterchef. Her enduring presence across media showcases a career that has spanned nearly seven decades, marked by both artistic triumphs and personal perseverance.
