Rajkummar Rao’s biographical drama Prahaar has been pushed back from its original August 7 release, with the makers now eyeing September 4 as the new theatrical debut. The decision comes amid a crowded summer slate that already featured releases such as Spider‑Man: Brand New Day on July 30 and Batwara 1947 and Awarapan 2 on August 14, according to a July report by Bollywood Hungama.
However, the September 4 date presents a new challenge: the Amazon Prime Video hit Mirzapur: The Movie has locked the same day for its worldwide theatrical launch. The film, which adapts the popular crime‑drama series to the big screen, will bring back stars Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Divyenndu. The release date was officially announced in February and the project is being handled by Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment.
Mid‑Day’s latest report quotes an insider who says the clash could complicate the release strategy for Prahaar. “That makes the decision tricky for the makers of Prahaar. Mirzapur has three seasons of streaming history behind it and an established fan base. The question within trade circles is how much of that digital fandom will convert into a paid theatrical audience,” the source added.
While Mirzapur rides the wave of a familiar streaming franchise, Prahaar tells the true story of special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam and his high‑profile case against terrorist Ajmal Kasab in the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. Directed by Avinash Arun, the film features Rajkummar Rao in the lead role, with Wamiqa Gabbi, Jaideep Ahlawat and Sikandar Kher also in the cast.
According to the report, the makers of Prahaar have not yet confirmed a final release date. They plan to announce a new window after gauging audience response to the Mirzapur trailer, likely within the next week. The film’s original August 7 schedule had already been postponed, and the new September window may see it compete head‑to‑head with the highly anticipated Mirzapur: The Movie on the same day.
