In a rare cinematic showdown this August, two highly anticipated Tamil releases, Lokesh Kanagaraj’s romantic‑action thriller DC and R. Madhavan’s biographical drama GDN, have been battling for box‑office supremacy. Both films opened to glowing reviews, yet their distinct genres have created a fierce competition in the Tamil market.
DC, marking Kanagaraj’s first foray into acting, follows a romantic action thriller storyline loosely adapted from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s novel Devdas. Directed by Arun Matheswaran, the film features Wamiqa Gabbi in a leading role and has already attracted significant attention for its fresh take on a classic narrative.
Conversely, GDN is a biopic that chronicles the life of inventor and engineer G. D. Naidu. Directed by Krishnakumar Ramakumar and produced by Madhavan himself, the movie also stars Sathyaraj, Jayaram, Priyamani and Dushara Vijayan, bringing a star‑studded ensemble to the screen.
According to a report published by Sacnilk, DC experienced a noticeable dip in footfall on its fourth day, a typical working‑day slump, with an occupancy of just 28.54% during morning shows. The film earned ₹9.55 crore on day three but has struggled to maintain momentum on the first Monday, collecting only ₹1.75 crore by 1 pm. Despite the downturn, analysts predict that DC will cross the ₹25 crore threshold today, solidifying its lead.
In contrast, GDN recorded ₹1.14 crore on day three but is expected to see a sharp decline, failing to reach ₹1 crore in India on day four. The biopic is projected to miss the ₹5 crore mark over its first four days, indicating a steep drop in audience interest.
Overall, the data suggests that Lokesh Kanagaraj’s DC will maintain its advantage over Madhavan’s GDN on the first Monday, even after a significant dip. Fans of both films are urged to share which release they prefer as the week unfolds.
