Actor R Madhavan has taken a stand in defence of cinema‑goers who have become increasingly vocal about their expectations and frustrations before a film even reaches the screen. In a recent interview, the veteran star explained why he believes the audience’s right to judge a movie from its teaser or trailer is not only justified but essential to the industry’s growth.
Madhavan said that audiences have only recently found a voice, a change he attributes to the way families choose what to watch. “The wife and child may want something different, but the husband insists on a particular star’s film, only to find it not up to the mark,” he noted. He called this a form of “stupidity” that has become commonplace, as people now complain about a film’s pacing, acting or direction even before it is released.
He added that the common man, who simply pays for a ticket, becomes the true master of the filmmaker. “If my film doesn’t do well, my family will feel embarrassed to go around,” he said, underscoring how the audience’s reaction can impact a director’s career and the film’s financial success. Madhavan urged filmmakers to respect this power, saying, “You have to salute what he says.”
Speaking about the broader industry, the actor highlighted the contrast between the public scrutiny faced by film makers and the relative privacy enjoyed by professionals in other fields. “This kind of discrimination doesn’t happen to a scientist, an industrialist, or anybody because their circle of life is very small,” he explained. He stressed that cinema is a communal experience where the family’s reputation is tied to the movie’s reception.
In 2025, Madhavan appeared in a string of projects across languages, including the Hindi releases Hisaab Barabar, Kesari Chapter 2, Aap Jaisa Koi, De De Pyaar De 2 and Dhurandhar, as well as the Tamil Netflix original Test. He also starred in the Hindi action film Dhurandhar: The Revenge and the biopic GDN about GD Naidu, which he co‑wrote and produced. Upcoming releases include Adhirshtasaali and Circle, and he will host the Zee5 series Jeena Isi Ka Naam Hai 2.0.
