Actress Anupama Parameswaran opened up about a painful chapter of her life, revealing that she endured nearly two years of emotional and physical abuse in a relationship that she now describes as narcissistic. The revelations came in an interview with Dhanya Varma, weeks after the actress’s cryptic social‑media posts sparked speculation about a breakup with actor Dhruv Vikram. Parameswaran chose not to name her former partner, instead focusing on the abusive pattern she experienced and how it affected her mental health, career and close relationships.
She explained that the social‑media post that ignited widespread discussion was not a spur‑of‑the‑moment decision. According to Parameswaran, she had deliberately stayed away from social media for an extended period to recover, and the single post was the culmination of two years of physical and emotional distress. She said she waited until she felt ready to speak publicly, refusing to disclose details until she had the courage to do so.
Parameswaran described the relationship as a textbook case of narcissistic abuse, noting that such dynamics often appear harmless at first. She illustrated how seemingly innocent comments about clothing, photographs and online activity can evolve into controlling behavior, with a partner demanding approval for everyday decisions. She likened the emotional cycle to characters in the Tamil film Anniyan, describing how the partner could swing from affectionate and caring to harsh and insensitive, then return with apologies and promises of change—only for the cycle to restart.
The constant anxiety that accompanied the relationship left Parameswaran feeling on edge, worrying about how her partner might react to her words or actions. She said she gradually withdrew from open communication with friends and family, feeling compelled to protect her partner from criticism. She also revealed that discussions about marriage began within the first few months of the relationship. Despite her reservations that things were moving too quickly and something felt off, she repeatedly postponed the engagement, ultimately deciding to step away.
Parameswaran’s candid interview underscores the insidious nature of narcissistic abuse and the long‑term toll it can take on a person’s well‑being. By sharing her experience, she hopes to raise awareness and encourage others who may be enduring similar patterns to seek help and speak out.
