Anirudh Composed DC's Raga of Revenge in 48 Hours; Made for Cannes Trailer

When the Tamil film DC hit the screens, it was not only the story of a gangster and his turbulent relationships that drew attention, but also the soundtrack that accompanied it. Composed by Anirudh Ravichander, the track “Raga of Revenge” instantly became a fan favourite after its early release on YouTube, long before the movie’s theatrical debut.

According to Anirudh, the song was born out of a tight deadline. He revealed that the film’s trailer was slated for submission to the Cannes Film Festival only 48 hours before the cut‑off. “We had to score the trailer in a very short time,” he told Mashable India and Sun TV. “We thought, why not release it online as well? It would be cool.” The track was therefore produced and shared online ahead of the film’s official release, a strategy that paid off as it quickly went viral.

In the interview, the composer explained his creative process: he wanted the music to feel distinctly Indian for an international audience. “I wanted it to be as Indian as it could be,” he said. “So I started with a South‑Indian rhythm and then added a Hindustani vocal element to showcase both North and South India.” The result is a fusion of traditional beats and contemporary soundscapes that has resonated with listeners across the country.

Beyond the music, DC itself is a modern retelling of the classic Devdas narrative, directed by Arun Matheswaran. The plot follows Devadas, a violent gangster, and his interactions with Parvathy, a bar singer, and Chandra, a prostitute seeking hope. Lokesh Kanagaraj makes his acting debut in the lead role, while Wamiqa Gabbi and Krish deliver strong supporting performances, earning praise from critics and audiences alike.

Critics have highlighted the film’s gritty storytelling and the director’s ability to keep viewers on edge. A review from the Hindustan Times noted that, “DC might have a familiar story to tell, but Arun Matheswaran does enough to ensure you don’t know what’s coming next.” The review praised Lokesh’s debut and the film’s brutal yet beautiful depiction of a system that leaves people broken.
