Cinema VinesRani Mukerji was presented with a Doctor of Letters by La Trobe University in a ceremony that saw the actress break into tears of joy. The award, given in recognition of her three‑decade career in Indian cinema and her off‑screen contributions, followed a similar honour bestowed on Shah Rukh Khan in 2019. In a clip shared by Viral Bhayani, Mukerji was seen wiping away her tears while smiling, a moment that underscored the emotional weight of the recognition.
In a heartfelt note, the actress described the doctorate as “one of the most humbling moments of my life.” She added, “For someone who has always believed that films can change hearts before they change minds, this recognition means more than I can possibly express.” Mukerji reflected on her film choices, saying she has always preferred stories that “have made an impact in my heart first,” and that she strives to represent “the powerful girls and women of India” through cinema.
La Trobe University’s honour highlights the role of cinema in strengthening people‑to‑people ties between India and Australia. In addition, Mukerji received a special citation for acting excellence from the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM), which praised her three decades of memorable roles and the international reach of her work. Her notable films include Black, Hum Tum, Yuva, Bunty Aur Babli, No One Killed Jessica, the Mardaani franchise, Hichki, and the recent Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, for which she won the National Award for Best Actress last year.
After her latest appearance in Mardaani 3—a film that follows police officer Shivani Shivaji Roy as she investigates the disappearance of 93 young girls, which earned ₹76.27 crore worldwide—Mukerji is set to star in Shah Rukh Khan’s upcoming film King. Directed by Siddharth Anand and featuring Deepika Padukone, Suhana Khan, and Abhishek Bachchan, the movie is slated for release on December 24, 2026.
