Venky Atluri’s new venture, Vishwanath and Sons, hit the big screen on Friday, August 14, just in time for the Independence Day weekend. The film, starring Suriya as industrialist and pistol‑shooting savant Sanjay Vishwanath, and Mamitha Baiju as the young surrogate mother Maddy, opened to a mix of reviews and a respectable opening day haul.
According to the trade portal Sacnilk, the film collected ₹15.5 crore net in India on its first day across 5,034 screens, with an overall occupancy of 41.38%. Tamil markets outperformed Telugu ones, bringing in ₹9.15 crore versus ₹6 crore. Morning and afternoon showings registered 29.85% and 33.54% occupancy respectively, while evening and night slots saw 36.38% and a strong 62.69% occupancy.
Comparisons to Suriya’s recent releases are inevitable. His 2025 outing Retro opened to ₹19.25 crore but drew lukewarm reviews, eventually grossing ₹60.58 crore net. In contrast, Karuppu opened to ₹15.50 crore and earned critical praise, amassing ₹198.18 crore net over its run. Vishwanath and Sons will need a boost over the weekend to challenge these lifetime figures.
The film is written and directed by Venky Atluri and produced by Sithara Entertainments and Fortune Four Cinemas. It also features Radhika Sarathkumar and Raveena Tandon in supporting roles. Hindustan Times described the movie as a “self‑aware comedy‑drama” that balances modern sensibilities with a touch of classic storytelling.
With the weekend ahead, box‑office analysts expect a surge in collections, though a dip is anticipated during the weekdays. Whether Vishwanath and Sons can surpass the box‑office achievements of Suriya’s previous films remains to be seen.
