Arun Matheswaran’s latest film, a fresh take on the classic Devdas, opened in theatres on August 7 and has quickly become a box‑office hit, gathering a global gross of ₹100 crore in just two weeks. The film, produced by Sun Pictures, features Lokesh Kanagaraj in his first leading role, alongside Wamiqa Gabbi and Sanjana Krishnamoorthy.
Sun Pictures announced the milestone on social media, calling DC a “Massive Blockbuster” and posting a still of Lokesh holding a gun. Lokesh reposted the message, expressing gratitude with the caption, “All this love… forever grateful.” Wamiqa also thanked fans on Instagram Stories. According to trade site Sacnilk, the film has earned ₹61.54 crore net and ₹70.85 crore gross in India, with an additional ₹21.85 crore from overseas, totaling ₹92.70 crore in 14 days.
Despite being built on a modest budget, DC ranks among the highest‑grossing Tamil releases of the year, trailing only Vijay’s Jana Nayagan, Suriya’s Karuppu, and Vishwanath & Sons. It has surpassed Parasakthi’s lifetime collection of ₹85.10 crore, securing the fourth spot on the year‑to‑date chart. The film’s momentum as it enters its third week remains to be seen.
In the story, Lokesh portrays Devadas, a gangster known as Das, while Sanjana plays bar singer Parvathy and Wamiqa plays exploited sex worker Chandra. The action thriller blends violence with a romantic subplot involving the three leads. Composer Anirudh Ravichander’s score has been widely praised for complementing the film’s gritty tone.
Matheswaran, who previously directed the 2024 Dhanush‑starrer Captain Miller, has shifted the traditional Devdas narrative from affluent settings to a world of crime and survival. The film explores how a hardened protagonist, stripped of privilege, navigates love and loyalty in a ruthless environment.
