Veteran South Indian actress Sowcar Janaki, who had a prolific career spanning Telugu, Tamil, Kannada and Malayalam cinema, passed away on August 21 at the age of 94 in Chennai. The actress, known for her work in more than 400 films, was briefly admitted to a private hospital before her death. Her final appearance on screen was in the 2023 Telugu film Anni Manchi Sakunamule, where she played a character named after herself as an adoptive grandmother to the protagonist.
Director Nandini Reddy, who helmed Janaki’s last film, paid heartfelt tribute to the “grand old lady of Indian cinema” on Instagram. In her Stories, Reddy shared a photo of Janaki with co‑stars Malvika Nair and the film crew, captioning it “RIP Amma” with a folded‑hands emoji. She also posted images of Janaki dubbing for her role and a handwritten note she had sent to the actress. Reddy wrote, “This grand old lady of Indian cinema was the most affectionate and most professional artist I have ever had the privilege of working with. She told us stories, cooked and fed us all while doing her work as immaculately as she spoke. Independent, outspoken, articulate and most benevolent… Amma we were blessed to share a small part of your journey… farewell.”
In Anni Manchi Sakunamule, Janaki appeared alongside Santosh Sobhan and Malvika Nair, with supporting performances from Rajendra Prasad, Rao Ramesh, Naresh and Gautami. The film marked her final on‑screen appearance, following her last Tamil outing, Biskoth (released in 2020), which was her 400th film and a parody directed by R.K. Kannan.
Janaki’s career began in 1950 with the Telugu film Shavukaru, earning her the nickname “Sowcar.” She made her Tamil debut in 1952’s Valayapathi and quickly became a sought‑after star across multiple languages. Remarkably, she balanced her personal life—marrying at a young age, having three children, and graduating from Gauhati University—while also working as a radio jockey for All India Radio’s Madras station in her early years.
Her legacy has been honored by a generation of actors, including Vijay, Kamal Haasan, Jr. NTR, and Chiranjeevi, who all paid tribute to her passing. Janaki’s enduring impact on Indian cinema continues to be celebrated by fans and industry peers alike.
