Manu Rishi Chadha has captured attention with his portrayal of former Pakistan President and Army Chief Pervez Musharraf in Netflix’s new series Operation Safed Sagar. The show, which has been praised for its blend of aerial action and political intrigue, follows the Indian Air Force’s daring missions during the 1999 Kargil War and delves into Pakistan’s political machinations that brought the conflict to a head.
Chadha’s performance has earned commendations from both critics and viewers, who describe his depiction of Musharraf as nuanced and restrained. In an interview with PTI, the actor noted that fans have told him they feel a “love‑filled hate” toward the character, saying, “If we didn’t love you, we would only hate you.” He added that the reaction is partly due to the emotional weight of the 1999 events, with many people, including members of the armed forces, reaching out to express how deeply affected they were by the war.
Despite his reputation for comedic roles in films such as Oye Lucky! Lucky Oye!, Tanu Weds Manu Returns, and Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan, Chadha approached the darker role of Musharraf with caution. He admitted feeling nervous about the potential for audiences to conflate the character with his real‑life persona, explaining that his background in comedy helped reassure viewers that he was simply an actor. “If the character is such, then the actor must also be like that,” he said, but he was relieved that people recognized the distinction.
In the series, Musharraf is portrayed as a scheming antagonist who manipulates the international community and keeps Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the dark about his plans. Chadha’s portrayal is said to highlight the difficulty of forgiving a figure who played a pivotal role in the war, even as some may find it easier to forgive Pakistan as a nation.
The show’s ensemble includes Jimmy Shergill, Siddharth, Abhay Verma, and Adil Hussain, among others, and follows the Golden Arrows Squadron as they undertake high‑altitude combat missions while grappling with the personal costs of war. Operation Safed Sagar has received almost universal acclaim for its storytelling and production values, cementing its place as a standout entry in the genre of war dramas.
