Cinema VinesTelugu actress Sri Gouri Priya has carved a niche for herself in Tamil cinema, a move that surprised many after her breakout role in the Telugu hit Chennai Love Story. The Secunderabad‑born performer, who shared her journey with the Hindustan Times, explained how growing up in a region where dubbed films were common blurred the lines between Telugu and Tamil for her. She recalled, “As a child, I was too young to understand the difference between Telugu and Tamil films as many dubbed films would release here. A lot of my childhood favourite films are Tamil dub.” This early exposure laid the groundwork for her later success in Kollywood, where she made a name for herself with the 2024 film Lover, which turned her into a household name across the state.
Learning Tamil was not a foregone conclusion for the actress. She admitted that mastering a language that was not her mother tongue was initially daunting. “When I was younger, I would sing a lot of Telugu songs that were actually dubbed from Tamil. Later, I used to listen to them in the original language to understand the meaning. It would intrigue me to hear how different they would sound, even though the tune and meaning are the same,” she told the newspaper. The pandemic accelerated her immersion: “During the pandemic, I started watching films in the original language too. That brought me closer to Tamil cinema.” By the time she worked on her second Tamil film, Happy Raj, she was fully conversant, able to understand and deliver her lines fluently.
Gouri’s entry into Kollywood has been met with warm reception. She noted that many Telugu fans now see her as a Tamilian who migrated to Tollywood, a misconception she gently corrects. “I’m just a Telugu girl who did a little well in Tamil. The Tamilians have also equally accepted me and are surprised by my speaking skills,” she said. The industry’s embrace has reinforced her confidence, and she feels she has “no looking back since I learned Tamil.” Her growing popularity is reflected in the growing roster of Tamil projects she has lined up.
The actress’s next venture is the Tamil film Bro Club (originally titled Bro Code), directed by Karthik Yogi and produced by Ravi Mohan. The cast also features SJ Suryah, Arjun Ashokan, Shraddha Srinath, and Malavika Manoj. Gouri shared that the past year and a half has been “rough and overwhelming,” prompting her to take a brief hiatus while she reviews scripts. “I shot for Bro Club last year and am waiting to go back on set for that,” she added, hinting at a return to the silver screen soon.
Beyond her film career, Gouri holds a Master’s degree in Journalism and has spent more than a decade reporting for prominent outlets such as The Times of India and Reader’s Digest. Despite her professional background, she remains “a movie buff first,” a passion that continues to drive her pursuit of diverse roles across South Indian cinema.
