Prithviraj Sukumaran’s ‘Khalifa’ takes a 60% tumble; Monday’s haul dips below ₹1 crore

Prithviraj Sukumaran’s Malayalam action‑crime thriller "Khalifa" has seen a sharp decline in its Indian box‑office earnings on Monday, August 24, falling to ₹0.83 crore net for the day. According to Sacnilk, the film had collected ₹2.10 crore on Sunday, meaning Monday’s figure is down by roughly 60.5%.

Since its theatrical release on August 20, "Khalifa" has amassed a net total of ₹12.73 crore in India, with an Indian gross of ₹14.79 crore. Overseas collections have reached ₹16.25 crore, bringing the worldwide gross to ₹31.04 crore. The film’s first four days yielded higher daily takings than Monday, with a ₹5.35 crore net on opening Thursday, followed by ₹2.40 crore on Friday, ₹2.05 crore on Saturday and ₹2.10 crore on Sunday.

The story centres on a powerful gold‑smuggling figure who inherits a vast criminal empire built by previous generations of his family. The narrative follows his operations across a network that spans the Middle East and India, placing the smuggling ring at the core of the plot. Prithviraj Sukumaran leads the cast, joined by Neil Nitin Mukesh, Indrans and Sanju Sivaram, with Shammi Thilakan also featured and a cameo appearance by Mohanlal.

"Khalifa" was directed by Vysakh and written by Jinu V. Abraham, who also co‑produced the film with Suraj Kumar under Jiinu Abraham Innovation. Co‑producers Sijo Sebastian and Sreelal Soolapani, and T‑Series Films, which presented the movie, contributed to its production. Jomon T. John handled cinematography, Jakes Bejoy composed the music, Chaman Chakko edited the film, and Mohandas was the production designer. Action sequences were choreographed by Yannick Ben, Chethan D'Souza and Phoenix Prabhu.

With Monday’s earnings dropping below the ₹1 crore threshold, the film’s performance for the remainder of its first week will be closely watched. The Day 6 run is currently underway on Tuesday, August 25, and the numbers from that day will provide the next indication of how "Khalifa" fares in the competitive Indian market.
