Nearly thirty years after its original release, the classic Malayalam romantic comedy “Thenmavin Kombathu” is making a triumphant return to the silver screen in a pristine 4K Dolby Atmos edition. The film, which first captivated audiences in 1994, will hit theatres this September, with the streaming platform Matinee Now unveiling a fresh teaser that promises to bring the beloved story to a new generation of viewers.
Directed by the veteran filmmaker Priyadarshan, the movie stars Mohanlal and Shobana in the lead roles, supported by an ensemble cast that includes Nedumudi Venu, Pappu, Sreenivasan, Sukumari, Kaviyoor Ponnamma and KPAC Lalitha. The original 35‑mm print was meticulously scanned at 4K resolution, and the soundtrack and audio were remixed in Dolby Atmos, creating a richer, more immersive experience while preserving the film’s original charm.
Matinee Now emphasized that the restoration process was carried out without altering the source material, aiming to present the film as closely as possible to the vision of Priyadarshan and his team. The company highlighted that “Thenmavin Kombathu” has “never aged,” noting that its blend of romance, comedy, music, and rustic appeal has kept it a favorite across multiple generations.
In addition to the technical upgrades, the rerelease serves as a tribute to the original crew members who have since passed away. Matinee Now stated that audiences will once again have the opportunity to experience the contributions of these artists on the big screen, honoring their legacy.
With the 4K Dolby Atmos version, fans of the original film and newcomers alike can enjoy the timeless story of “Thenmavin Kombathu” in a format that brings every detail to life, reaffirming its status as a cherished classic in Malayalam cinema.
