Subhash Ghai recalls scuffle with Salman Khan; Salim Khan’s intervention mended ties

In a candid interview with Times Now, veteran filmmaker Subhash Ghai revealed that his collaboration with Bollywood star Salman Khan on the 2008 film Yuvvraaj began not with camaraderie but with a heated confrontation. Ghai recalled that at a party, Salman, reportedly under the influence, began speaking in a manner that upset the director. When Ghai tried to correct him, the actor allegedly began to abuse the filmmaker, leading to a physical scuffle between the two.

According to Ghai, the altercation escalated to the point where Salman’s father, the legendary actor Salim Khan, had to step in. The following morning, Salim Khan called Ghai to inform him that Salman had relayed the incident to his mother and that he had already reprimanded his son. He then arranged for Salman to visit Ghai’s home to apologize. The actor’s respectful approach during the visit convinced Ghai to let go of the grievance, and the two subsequently became friends and collaborators.

Despite the rocky start, the partnership produced Yuvvraaj, a musical family drama that reunited Ghai with a star‑packed cast including Anil Kapoor, Zayed Khan, and Katrina Kaif. The story follows three estranged brothers battling over their father’s inheritance, with Salman playing Deven Yuvvraaj, a struggling musician. The film’s soundtrack was composed by A.R. Rahman, while Gulzar penned the lyrics. Although the movie received mixed reviews and underperformed at the box office, the professional relationship between Ghai and Salman endured.

Ghai has publicly praised Salman on multiple occasions. In February, he shared a photo of the actor on Instagram from Jackie Shroff’s birthday celebration, writing, “Indeed Salman Khan is one of the most gracious stars who respects his seniors in his mind, heart and gesture too. On just receipt of my SMS asking him to join a close friend’s eve on birthday of dear Jackie Shroff, he surprised us with his gracious visit at my home and brightened the eve. Stay blessed always, Salman.” This gesture underscores the lasting friendship that evolved from a once‑turbulent encounter.
