Mihir Ahuja soars in real MiG‑21; his role in Operation Safed Sagar feels like a dream

Actor Mihir Ahuja has carved a niche across films and streaming projects, but his newest work in the military drama Operation Safed Sagar has given him an experience few actors ever get. In the series he portrays Flying Officer C.H. Bal Reddy, a real Indian Air Force officer whose story is based on true events. The role required Ahuja to don an authentic uniform, film at actual Air Force bases, and even sit inside a MiG‑21 cockpit, offering him a rare glimpse into the life of a national serviceman.

During an exclusive interview with the Hindustan Times, Ahuja described the moment he stepped into the MiG‑21 as “surreal.” He said, “I mean, someone would be foolish to say no to such a project because you’re getting to play a real‑life hero. What better than that?” He added that the responsibility of wearing the uniform and portraying a real officer was a privilege he did not want to miss. Ahuja highlighted the support he received from the Indian Air Force, noting that shooting at their stations and real locations was a dream come true for him.

Beyond the technical aspects, Ahuja spoke about the personal impact of working alongside actual Air Force personnel. He observed that the officers were “cool and calm,” both physically and mentally, and that they carried the weight of their duties with a calm composure. He remarked that, “They are fighting for the nation, but still, they’re like calm inside, like fully. They have problems in their life. Like us.” Ahuja emphasized how their zeal, passion, and fighter spirit taught him to live in the moment, noting that they “live one day at a time, they live in the moment, they live the day to the fullest.”

When asked about the lessons he took away from the officers, Ahuja said the experience was transformative. He felt that every character changes an actor, and that playing Reddy had taught him about courage, discipline, and the reality that even heroes are human. The actor also mentioned a special compliment he received from Flying Officer Bal Reddy and his family, underscoring the mutual respect forged during production.

With Operation Safed Sagar already capturing audiences, Ahuja’s portrayal of a real-life Air Force officer adds depth to the series and showcases his growing range as an actor. His firsthand experience in the cockpit and behind the scenes has not only enriched his performance but also deepened his appreciation for the men and women who serve in the Indian Air Force.
