Cinema VinesMouni Roy, best known for her breakout role in Ekta Kapoor’s supernatural hit Naagin, traces her rise to fame back to a serendipitous moment while she was still a university student. In a recent episode of Farah Khan’s YouTube vlog, the actress recalled walking outside Delhi’s Miranda House, where she was studying English Honours, when a member of Ekta Kapoor’s team spotted her and approached her on the street. “I was walking outside the university. Somebody from Ekta Ma’am’s team saw me walking on the road, and tapped me on the shoulder and said…” Mouni recounted, to which Farah laughed and asked, “That really happened? Kya baat kar rahi hai? We only hear these stories that someone was sitting in a cafe and was spotted by someone!” Mouni confirmed, “But it really happened. That’s exactly how it came to be.” The encounter led to her first television role in the popular serial Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, where she played the great‑granddaughter of Smriti Irani’s character.
Before moving to Mumbai, Mouni had no intention of pursuing a long‑term acting career. She told Khan that she initially came to the city for a summer job in Indian street theatre, planning to stay only three or four months before returning to Delhi. “I would work for three or four months and then go back to Delhi,” she said, but she fell in love with the city and the entertainment industry, and the rest, as she puts it, is history.
On the screen, Mouni has recently appeared in Varun Dhawan’s film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai, which also stars Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur and is directed by David Dhawan. The film did not meet box‑office expectations. She also starred in the web series Ab Hoga Hisaab, featuring Sanjay Kapoor, Shaheer Sheikh, Avinash Mishra, Nimrit Kaur Ahluwalia, Harman Singh and Aasheema Vardaan, and the series has been renewed for a second season. In 2025, she will appear in the film The Bhootnii alongside Sanjay Dutt, Sunny Singh and Palak Tiwari.
Outside of her professional life, Mouni has been in the headlines for her personal affairs. In May, she and businessman Suraj Nambiar announced their decision to divorce after four years of marriage. The couple released a joint statement on Instagram, condemning what they called “sensationalised” rumours about their relationship. The note read, “We note with dismay the unnecessary and intrusive attention into our personal lives by certain quarters of the media. We would like to state that we have decided to part ways and are taking the necessary time to address matters privately and amicably.” Mouni and Nambiar began dating in 2018 and married in 2022.
