Grand Theft Auto VI clip tops Netflix charts; 31 million viewers in six hours

Netflix’s latest chart‑topping moment came not from a new series or a film, but from a six‑hour exclusive window of gameplay footage for the long‑awaited Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA VI). The 27‑minute clip, which premiered on the streaming platform before moving to YouTube and other sites, amassed 31.1 million views in its first six hours, according to Netflix’s data arm, Tudum. The figure was enough to secure the top spot on the service’s weekly viewing charts, eclipsing the final season of Outer Banks and a Robert De Niro thriller that had also debuted on the platform.

GTA VI, developed and published by Rockstar Games, is the eighth main entry in the Grand Theft Auto series and the 16th overall. The game is set in the fictional US state of Leonida—modeled after Florida—and follows a criminal duo: Jason Duval, a former Army soldier turned drug runner, and Lucia Caminos, the franchise’s first non‑optional female lead who was incarcerated after fighting for her family. Their story begins with a botched bank heist and spirals into a statewide conspiracy that forces them to protect one another. The title is slated for release on November 19, and its marketing push has already drawn attention, with the first trailer in 2023 racking up 293 million YouTube views and breaking several viewership records.

Netflix’s decision to host the GTA VI footage was unprecedented, marking the first time the streaming giant has used its platform to promote an upcoming video game. The six‑hour exclusive window proved highly effective, generating a view count that surpassed the next‑most‑watched titles on the service—De Niro’s thriller The Whisper Man with just over 20 million views and the Spanish film Facing El Chapo. Among television series, Death of the Pastor’s Wife led the pack with 19 million views, while Outer Banks slipped to third place.

In the days leading up to the clip’s release, more than a dozen GTA VI clips were leaked online. Take‑Two Interactive Software Inc., the parent company of Rockstar Games, has responded by subpoenaing Discord Inc., the chat platform, in an effort to identify the leaker. The incident highlights the high stakes surrounding the game’s launch, which is expected to be one of the most lucrative entertainment products ever.
