Cinema VinesGeorge Clooney, the Kentucky‑born actor who began his career in the 1980s with a string of small roles, was honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the Venice Film Festival on Wednesday. The 65‑year‑old, whose name is now synonymous with Hollywood stardom, has used his celebrity to champion political and humanitarian causes.
The festival’s artistic director, Alberto Barbera, praised Clooney as a “tremendous actor” who can take a stand on social and political issues in a “radical, courageous” way. Barbera also noted that Clooney’s appeal goes beyond his looks and charm, calling him “indisputable.”
Clooney reflected on his long journey, saying, “I’ve been an actor for 45 years now and looking back it sounds like it was intentional, like I had a plan.” He added that he had simply been trying to pay the rent and avoid returning to Kentucky to cut tobacco. The actor revealed that he arrived in Los Angeles in 1984 on the advice of cousin Miguel Ferrer and spent a decade moving from one bit‑part to another, shooting 15 pilots that never aired.
His breakthrough came in 1994 with the role of Dr. Doug Ross on the NBC medical drama ER, a 15‑season ratings hit that launched his film career. Clooney later declined a contract renewal to focus on movies, though his first major film in 1997, Batman & Robin, was widely panned. He joked that only his two children thought he performed well in the film.
The following year, he turned his career around with the role of bank robber Jack Foley in Steven Soderbergh’s thriller Out of Sight. The 2000s saw a hot streak, highlighted by the Coen brothers’ comedy O Brother, Where Art Thou? and the creation of his production company with Soderbergh. The company produced the Ocean’s trilogy, sharing top billing with Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Julia Roberts, and the spy thriller Syriana.
