The incident began on May 14 when Thornton was aboard American Airlines Flight 1276 from Charlotte to Los Angeles. A passenger reportedly took photos of Thornton’s laptop screen, which appeared to show a chat forum with disturbing content. The images were shared by TMZ, drawing public attention to the case. American Airlines confirmed that law enforcement was dispatched to the aircraft after it landed at LAX, following concerns raised by a customer on board.
Thornton’s attorney, Allison Hart, has denied any wrongdoing. She explained that the website Thornton accessed was opened by mistake and that he had no criminal conduct. Hart also highlighted that Thornton had recently become involved in suicide‑prevention advocacy after the loss of a close family member two years ago. She said Thornton believed he was opening a mental‑health support forum, left after realizing the nature of the site, and that he has never viewed, downloaded, or consumed any illicit material.
Although no criminal charges have been filed against Thornton, Sony has already begun recasting his announcer role for upcoming episodes of Wheel of Fortune. The show, which stars Ryan Seacrest and Vanna White, is set to return for Season 44 on September 14. Thornton has served as the show’s announcer since 2011, succeeding the late Charlie O’Donnell, and has also worked on the spin‑off Celebrity Wheel of Fortune.
