Spider‑Man 2.0 keeps the crown; $918 M domestic haul tops charts

Spider‑Man: Brand New Day continues to dominate the North American box office, holding the number‑one spot for a sixth consecutive week. The Tom Holland‑Zendaya superhero hit $18 million over the Labor Day weekend, a 20 percent drop from the previous week, but still added to its domestic total of $918 million since opening on July 31.

Across the Atlantic, the film has pulled in an additional $1.48 billion internationally, cementing its place as the highest‑grossing Marvel blockbuster in U.S. and Canada history. Meanwhile, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, distributed by Universal, has climbed to second place with a domestic haul of $584.7 million after earning $13 million in its eighth week.

Third place is occupied by the delayed Looney Tunes‑style hybrid Coyote vs. Acme, which earned $11.3 million in its second week, sliding from the runner‑up spot. The film had been shelved by Warner Bros. in late 2023 after production wrapped, only to be released by Ketchup Entertainment following a $30 million tax write‑off and positive reviews.

Paramount’s debut, By Any Means, secured fourth place with $7.4 million. The civil‑rights‑era crime thriller stars Mark Wahlberg and Yahya Abdul‑Mateen II and is set in the 1960s deep south. Film critic David A. Gross praised it as a strong opening for an original crime thriller, noting that while critics were lukewarm, audience scores were very good.

Fifth place goes to Sony Pictures’ Insidious: Out of the Further, which earned $6.5 million in its third week. The sixth installment of the horror franchise stars Amelia Eve, Brandon Perea and Maisie Richardson‑Sellers, following a young woman who can summon spirits into the mortal realm while being haunted herself.

The top ten list also includes CARS: 20th Anniversary, Buddy, Paw Patrol: The Dino Movie, The End of Oak Street and The Dog Stars, rounding out the current box‑office standings.
