The series chronicles the armed rebellion against the British Raj, a chapter of history that has rarely been shown on screen. While films about Bhagat Singh, Subhash Chandra Bose and Master Surya Sen exist, most cinematic retellings focus on the non‑violent struggle led by Mahatma Gandhi. Advani says he wanted to bring the lesser‑known revolutionaries to the fore, making history feel more immediate and entertaining.
In a pre‑premiere interview with the Hindustan Times, Advani explained that the goal was to make history “a little more fun and relatable.” He pointed out that the stories of fighters such as Rash Behari Bose, Bagha Jatin, Sachindranath Sanyal and Pratibha Lahiri are unfamiliar to many Indians today. The director noted that when the first teaser dropped, most viewers mistook the lead actor Bhuvan Bam for a portrayal of Subhash Chandra Bose, highlighting how little people know about these figures.
Advani stressed that the armed rebellion was not an act of indiscriminate violence but a response to a 200‑year‑old colonial oppression. He quoted the revolutionaries’ mindset as, “They are shooting at us, we will shoot at them,” underscoring the inevitability of armed resistance before the widespread adoption of non‑violence around 1920. The series, based on Sanjeev Sanyal’s book Revolutionaries: The Other Story Of How India Won Its Freedom, seeks to illuminate this often‑overlooked period.
With a cast that includes Bhuvan Bam and Rohit Sara, The Revolutionaries follows the daring exploits of these lesser‑known freedom fighters. Advani, who has previously directed Rocket Boys and Freedom at Midnight, aims to blend action with historical narrative, offering audiences a new perspective on the complex path to India’s independence.
