Holmes had risen to prominence after claiming that Theranos’ Edison device could run hundreds of medical tests from a single finger‑prick blood sample, a promise that attracted high‑profile backers such as media magnate Rupert Murdoch and members of the Walton family. Investigations later revealed that the technology did not perform as advertised, and prosecutors argued that Holmes deliberately exaggerated the company’s capabilities to secure funding.
During the trial, Holmes maintained that she had not intended to defraud anyone and pleaded not guilty. Her defense team suggested that she believed in the company’s mission and that her former romantic partner and business associate, Ramesh “Sunny” Balwani, had influenced key decisions. Nevertheless, a California jury found her guilty on the investor‑related fraud charges while acquitting her on several patient‑related counts.
Balwani, who served as Theranos’ president and chief operating officer, was separately convicted of fraud and received a nearly thirteen‑year prison term. Holmes reported to a federal prison in May 2023 after her sentencing. The case has recently resurfaced in the public eye with the release of the documentary “You Can See Everything,” which examines the final period before Holmes began serving her sentence.
