The visit, which surprised the club’s owner and athletes, was confirmed by the Ukrainian Boxing Federation and the club’s owner, Pavlo Chyshko, who shared a photo of Jolie and her son Knox on Instagram.
Chyshko said he had no idea Jolie would appear after receiving a booking for Sunday. In a video posted to Instagram, he explained that the actress “just happened completely by chance” and that she praised the gym, shook hands with the athletes, and spoke with Knox about his sporting background. The club’s name, Spadkoyemets, was mentioned in the federation’s caption, which noted that Knox and Ukrainian defenders had a Muay Thai training session at the venue.
Kharkiv, the country’s second‑largest city, lies close to the Russian border and has been a frequent target of artillery and missile attacks. Jolie, who has visited Ukraine at least twice since the full‑scale invasion began, has a history of humanitarian work, including serving as a UN special envoy for refugees.
While in Kharkiv, Jolie also promoted her latest film, "Without Blood," a war drama she wrote and directed, starring Salma Hayek and Demian Bichir. The movie, based on Alessandro Baricco’s novel, premiered at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and is slated for a September 18 theatrical release. Jolie described the film as a project aimed at providing “answers and healing after trauma,” a theme that echoes her own public struggles following her divorce from Brad Pitt.
The surprise visit underscored Jolie’s ongoing commitment to Ukraine amid the conflict, while her presence at the gym offered a brief moment of solidarity and morale for the city’s residents and athletes under siege.
