Cinema VinesA Manipuri guitarist named Chongtham Vikram Singh was fatally beaten in Delhi after he confronted a group of noisy workers outside his apartment on Sunday night. According to reports, the incident took place around 11:30 pm when Singh went downstairs to dispose of garbage and found workers from two nearby dhabas shouting and creating a commotion. He intervened, asking them to stop the noise, which led to a violent confrontation. Witnesses say the attackers chased him to the third floor, overpowered him in a corridor, and repeatedly struck him before fleeing the scene.
Police received a call about the assault at 1:38 am the following morning, and Singh was taken to a private hospital in Okhla. He died during treatment, with doctors stating that his chances of survival were slim. His son, Yaiphaba, told PTI that his father had been shirtless when he was found and that the attackers were drinking alcohol and making noise outside their residence. Yaiphaba added that after the attack he rushed his father to the emergency room, only to learn that the injuries were fatal.
The tragic death has drawn attention from several prominent figures in the music industry. Mame Khan, a celebrated playback and folk singer from Rajasthan, shared a post on Instagram in response to the incident. He reposted a story from singer Chinmayi Tripathi, who had originally posted a poster calling for a protest against Singh’s death. Mame Khan’s caption read, “This is shocking you will always be remembered Vikram sir,” and he added, “Really hope that the family gets justice.”
Chongtham Vikram Singh and Mame Khan had previously collaborated on a music video in 2018, where they performed the Rajasthani folk song “Laal Peeli Ankhiyan.” The video blended traditional Rajasthani music with flamenco and Western influences, showcasing Singh playing guitar while Khan lent his voice. The collaboration had been well received, and the sudden loss of Singh has left fans and colleagues mourning his talent and life.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast), Vineet Kumar, confirmed that the incident occurred in Sunlight Colony, and that the police station received the call after the attack. B Ruchida Sharma, a Manipuri social activist, stated that the group of workers had been “consuming alcohol and making noise outside their residence.” The police have yet to identify the assailants, and the case remains under investigation. The community and music fraternity are calling for a thorough inquiry and justice for the slain guitarist.
