Yash, the Kannada star who spent more than four years crafting the story, screenplay, and dialogues of “Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown‑Ups,” was left stunned when the film, directed by Geetu Mohandas, failed to resonate with audiences and critics alike. The movie, released on 26 August in Kannada, Hindi, and English, was promoted as a high‑budget spectacle with a reported budget of over ₹500 crore, yet it has so far earned only ₹247.25 crore net in India and ₹338.50 crore worldwide, according to trade portal Sacnilk.
Despite the star‑powered cast that included Kiara Advani, Nayanthara, Huma Qureshi, Tara Sutaria and Rukmini Vasanth, “Toxic” opened to a wave of trolling and lukewarm reviews. The backlash was so intense that more than 300,000 piracy links were reportedly taken down after the release, a fact revealed by Jaidev Mohan, the film’s dubbing supervisor, on Prajavani’s YouTube channel.
When asked about the team’s reaction, Mohan said that he had spoken to Yash twice on the phone but had not met him in person since the film’s debut. He added that Yash became emotional after seeing the reviews and the day‑of reactions, and that the actor had tried to keep a level head, telling Mohan not to worry too much and to leave the verdict to the audience. Mohan echoed Yash’s sentiment, saying, “I can hear the pain,” and noted that the actor was ready to move on to the next project.
In the same interview, Mohan defended director Geetu Mohandas, calling her a “firebrand” and noting that many on social media had “something against” her. He also addressed rumours that other actors were attempting to diminish Yash’s stardom, stating that the actor had a “defence mechanism ready” and that it is not easy to defeat him. Mohan concluded that the audience is ultimately decisive: “If they like it, they will. If they don’t, they don’t. You can’t say, we made it well, they didn’t get it.”
The film’s failure has left the team grappling with the reality that even a massive budget and a star‑led cast cannot guarantee success. Yash’s emotional response and the candid comments from behind‑the‑scenes crew highlight the toll that a commercial disappointment can take on those who invested years of creative energy into a project.
