Mirzapur The Movie rockets past ₹130 cr; Pankaj Tripathi’s thriller defies superstar rule

Mirzapur: The Movie has surged past the ₹130‑crore mark, proving that a film without a marquee superstar can still dominate the Indian box office. The crime‑thriller, a spin‑off of the hit series, opened to an unexpected ₹25.75 crore on its first day, outpacing pre‑release estimates of ₹18‑20 crore and eclipsing earlier hits such as Saiyarā and Awarapan 2.

After a strong opening, the film kept the momentum going into the weekend. Saturday’s haul climbed to ₹32 crore, and Sunday saw a massive jump to ₹36 crore. Monday, which typically sees a dip, still delivered a solid ₹16 crore, keeping the film comfortably ahead of other releases that year. Tuesday’s earnings dipped slightly to ₹15.60 crore, and Wednesday’s collections added another ₹6.04 crore, bringing the total nett to ₹131.39 crore.

The ensemble cast—Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, and Pankaj Tripathi—alongside newcomers Jitendra Kumar, Ravi Kishan, and returning actors Abhishek Banerjee, Rasika Dugal, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Harshita Shekhar Gaur, and Shweta Tripathi—keeps the lawless world of Mirzapur alive. The story is set in 2018, revealing a new chapter from the first season’s narrative and featuring the battle for power amid bullets, betrayals, and bloody rivalries.

In a social media post, Divyenndu shared a photo with Pankaj Tripathi set to the song “Kaan Phaad” from the film, thanking fans for their support. He wrote, “Family hain aap log hamari.. aur aapne saabit kar diya!! Mirzapur family ki taraf se Dhanyawaad,” which translates to, “You guys are our family and you proved it. Thanks from the Mirzapur family.”

With its record‑breaking earnings, Mirzapur: The Movie demonstrates that strong storytelling and a dedicated fan base can triumph over the traditional superstar model, setting a new benchmark for Indian cinema releases.
