Cinema VinesGiorgos Mazonakis, the iconic Greek singer known for blending traditional laïkó with pop, dance and electronic music, died on Wednesday at the age of 54. The 54‑year‑old passed away in Athens after suffering a cardiac arrest during a visit to a private stem‑cell clinic on Karneadou Street in the Kolonaki district.
According to Greek public broadcaster ERT and the newspaper Kathimerini, emergency services were called by the clinic and an ambulance was dispatched to Elpis Hospital in Athens. Emergency responders arrived on a motorcycle around 4:26 p.m. local time, performed CPR on Mazonakis, and then transported him to the hospital where doctors attempted resuscitation but were unable to revive him. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
The singer had been scheduled for a procedure at the clinic, and the heart attack was reportedly triggered after an intravenous catheter was inserted. While the Greek Reporter has stated that the death was caused by a cardiac arrest episode, no official cause of death has been released by the family.
Mazonakis, born Georgios Apostolou, hailed from Sitia on the island of Crete but grew up in the Piraeus area. He rose to fame by reinventing Greek folk traditions and turning them into emotionally intense bouzouki songs. His career spanned nightclub performances at venues such as Posidonio, Bio‑Bio, Lido and Gazi, and he toured internationally in Cyprus, Germany, Australia and the United States. He also served as a coach on the reality TV show “The Voice of Greece.”
The Greek entertainment community has expressed deep sorrow at the loss of one of its most recognizable voices. Mazonakis was never married and had no children. His death marks the end of a significant era in contemporary Greek music.
