Yash’s ‘Toxic’ sinks into a record flop; net loss eclipses Adipurush

Yash’s highly anticipated return to the big screen with Geetu Mohandas’s Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown‑Ups began with a bang, pulling in ₹101 crore net on its opening day in India and earning a worldwide gross of ₹145 crore. The Kannada superstar, who had last appeared on the silver screen in the KGF franchise, was expected to deliver a blockbuster after a four‑year hiatus. The film’s lavish budget, star‑studded cast, and pre‑release buzz positioned it as one of the biggest Kannada releases ever and the second‑largest opening for any Indian film in 2026, trailing only behind Dhurandhar: The Revenge.

Despite the impressive debut, Toxic suffered a swift collapse. Negative reviews and poor word‑of‑mouth led to a dramatic drop in the second day, with net earnings falling to just ₹37 crore. By the sixth day, the film was making under ₹10 crore per day, and by its 15th day in theatres, it was earning a meagre ₹60 lakh across India. The worldwide daily gross also slipped below ₹1 crore, a stark contrast to the ₹150 crore it had been pulling in two weeks earlier.

As the film approached the end of its theatrical run, trade analysts estimated a total net collection of ₹247 crore in India and $4.5 million overseas, bringing the worldwide gross to roughly ₹339 crore. Even when accounting for the most conservative budget estimate of ₹500 crore, Toxic fell short by about ₹230 crore in net box‑office earnings. This loss eclipses the ₹220 crore deficit suffered by Prabhas’s 2024 film Adipurush, marking Toxic as the biggest shortfall for a major Indian production to date.

Directed by Geetu Mohandas, the film features a line‑up of prominent actors including Nayanthara, Kiara Advani, Huma Qureshi, Rukmini Vasanth, and Tara Sutaria. While the movie was marketed for its steamy and intimate scenes, it also drew criticism for depicting women in a potentially negative light. Released on August 26, Toxic quickly became a case study in how a strong opening does not guarantee sustained commercial success.

In summary, Toxic opened with record‑setting numbers but slid into a record‑breaking flop, incurring a net loss that surpasses even the most notorious failures in recent Indian cinema history.
