Yet one high‑profile critic, novelist and columnist Shobhaa De, has taken a different stance, calling the film a “no‑show” and admitting she fell asleep for 15 minutes during its 3‑hour, 17‑minute runtime.
De posted a short review on Instagram Reels, noting that she had not seen the original Amazon Prime series but entered the cinema with high expectations fueled by the franchise’s hype. She concluded that the movie “maybe should not have been made at all,” and that it left her wondering, “what the hell was going on?”
While De praised the ensemble cast, she singled out Ravi Kishan as “just brilliant” and Ali Fazal for his “unbelievably good” portrayal of Guddu. She was less enthusiastic about Pankaj Tripathi, describing his performance as “monotonous” with “the same old expressions.”
In a surprising twist, De highlighted a scene involving Tripathi’s character engaging in a sex act with Rasika Dugal’s vampish step‑mother, calling it a “big, big surprise.” She summed up her experience by listing the film’s gratuitous violence, aimless plot, and her own 15‑minute nap, adding that she heard two other women snoring in the back row.
De’s Instagram caption detailed her outlay: ₹900 for the ticket, ₹260 for bhel, and nearly four hours of “random set pieces.” She listed bizarre moments such as a dwarf, camel’s milk, a villain who stitches sexy bra‑lets for love, and a headless chicken scurrying for cover.
Mirzapur The Movie was directed by Gurmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna, produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment. The film stars Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Jitendra Kumar, and Ravi Kishan, and is based on the 2018 Amazon Prime Video series of the same name.
