The actor, who also served as one of the film’s producers, said that playing the character of Gautam was “an inevitable mistake” and that the script was “slightly regressive.” He explained that the only way to see the movie through to completion was to take the part, even though he was aware that the story’s most celebrated character was Deepika Padukone’s Veronica.
Saif recounted that he had no intention of chasing a “fancy” role; instead, he accepted the part because the film was in production and required a lead to move forward. He added that while the movie was ultimately a “breezy fun entertainer,” the choice to cast himself was a pragmatic one, aimed at ensuring the film’s release. “I did it so the film could get made,” he said, acknowledging that the decision was not driven by artistic ambition but by the practicalities of filmmaking.
Deepika Padukone, who portrayed Veronica, reflected on the character’s impact on her career in a 2021 interview with the Hindustan Times. She described Veronica as “the most special character” she has ever played, noting that the role left a lasting imprint on both her professional trajectory and personal life. Padukone emphasized that while actors often infuse parts of themselves into roles, they also carry aspects of those characters with them afterward.
The film, written by Imtiaz Ali and directed by Homi Adajania, was produced under Saif Ali Khan’s Illuminati Films and Dinesh Vijan’s Maddock Films. Though it received mixed to positive reviews upon release, Cocktail performed well at the box office, becoming a commercial hit in 2012.
