Mirzapur: The Movie breaks ₹155 crore barrier; outpaces Awarapan 2

Gurmeet Singh’s feature film debut, Mirzapur: The Movie, opened in Indian theatres on September 4 and has quickly become one of the highest‑grossing Hindi releases of 2026. The film, which adapts the popular Prime Video series that ran for three seasons, stars Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Jitendra Kumar, Rasika Dugal and Ravi Kishan. Critics praised its performances and its gritty take on the crime‑laden city of Mirzapur, and the positive reviews have translated into strong box‑office numbers.

According to trade portal Sacnilk, the movie earned a net of ₹7.84 crore on its opening Friday, pushing its domestic total to ₹156.29 crore. In its first week the film collected ₹149.70 crore, after a ₹25.75 crore opening that was followed by ₹32 crore and ₹36 crore over the first weekend. Weekday receipts fell to between ₹10.55 crore and ₹16 crore from Monday to Thursday, but the film’s overall momentum remains robust, especially as it faces competition from Priyadarshan’s Haiwaan starring Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar.

With a cumulative haul of ₹156.29 crore, Mirzapur: The Movie has surpassed the earnings of Awarapan 2 (₹150.43 crore) and Welcome to the Jungle (₹134.41 crore), cementing its place among the top‑grossing Hindi releases of the year. The film was also released in Telugu, though its performance in the Hindi market has been the standout factor in its commercial success.

Beyond its box‑office triumph, the film has attracted controversy over the use of the song “Shoorveer,” originally performed by rapperiya Baalam and dedicated to Maharana Pratap. The track was featured in a gangster scene, prompting objections from the original singer and from Rajendra Rathore, a senior BJP leader and former Rajasthan Assembly opposition head. Rathore wrote to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), demanding the removal of the song, arguing that pairing a patriotic anthem with criminal characters was disrespectful to Maharana Pratap’s legacy.

Produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under Excel Entertainment, the film was written by Puneet Krishna and directed by Gurmeet Singh. It follows the story arc of the web series that launched in 2018 and has now been adapted for the big screen. The movie’s success at the box office, coupled with its polarising cultural debate, marks it as a significant event in 2026’s cinematic landscape.
