Cinema VinesAt the Toronto International Film Festival 2026, the Tamil-language feature Dorothy made history by becoming the first Indian Tamil film in ten years to premiere at the prestigious event. The world premiere, held at Toronto’s Scotiabank Theatre, was presented by Jio Studios and produced by Sikhya Entertainment in partnership with Dhammam Films. The film was showcased in the Centrepiece section, a showcase for world premieres and acclaimed international features.
Writer‑director Karthik Subbaraj, who also co‑directed the film, described Dorothy as a story rooted in his own culture yet dealing with universal themes of friendship, prejudice and human connection. He added that having Ilaiyaraaja’s music accompany the film makes the experience even more special. Subbaraj was joined at the premiere by lead actors Keerthy Suresh, Sananth, and Rishikanth, as well as producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain.
Jio Studios’ President Jyoti Deshpande praised the film’s ability to transcend language barriers, saying, “Cinema has the ability to cross languages when the emotion at its centre is universal. Dorothy is a powerful example of that.” She highlighted the story’s focus on friendship, identity and human dignity, noting that the film’s premiere marks a proud moment for Tamil cinema worldwide.
Producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain echoed this sentiment, stating, “TIFF has been an important part of Sikhya’s journey, and bringing Dorothy here feels particularly special. At its heart, Dorothy is a deeply human story about identity, belonging and the courage to find your way back to yourself.” They also emphasized the collaborative strengths of Jio Studios and Sikhya Entertainment in presenting a strong Indian narrative to a global audience.
The film’s soundtrack, composed by legendary maestro Ilaiyaraaja, has already generated significant buzz. Two tracks, “Kalyana Virundhu” and “Muthumani,” each surpassed 10 million views on YouTube and ranked among the top five trending music videos in India. The 18‑track original score has helped establish the movie’s musical identity ahead of its theatrical release.
