Cinema VinesIn a wave of adult‑certified releases this month, Kareena Kapoor Khan’s latest film, Daayra, and Kunal Kemmu’s comedy‑drama Vibe both received ‘A’ ratings from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) on September 11. The decision means the movies are restricted to viewers aged 18 and older, a move that has drawn attention from fans and industry observers alike.
Daayra, an investigative thriller directed by Meghna Gulzar, runs for 143 minutes and 16 seconds – a total of 2 hours, 23 minutes and 16 seconds. The film stars Kapoor Khan alongside Prithviraj Sukumaran. With this certification, it becomes Kapoor Khan’s tenth adult‑only film, following titles such as Ajnabee (2001), Chameli (2003), Dev (2004), Omkara (2006), Kurbaan (2009), Heroine (2012), Udta Punjab (2016), Veere Di Wedding (2018) and The Buckingham Murders (2024).
Vibe, directed by and starring Kunal Kemmu, was also cleared with an ‘A’ rating. The 145‑minute and 55‑second film (2 hours, 25 minutes and 55 seconds) features a cast that includes Preity Zinta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Vanshika Dhir, Dinesh Lal Yadav (known as Nirahua) and Yashpal Sharma. It follows Zinta’s comeback film Batwara 1947, which received an adult certificate last month. An industry insider noted that while Daayra’s rating aligns with its mature theme, Vibe’s certification is surprising given its lighter, family‑friendly tone, reminiscent of Kemmu’s earlier work Madgaon Express (2024), which was U/A.
Both movies are slated for theatrical release on September 18. The CBFC’s decision comes amid a busy period for Hindi cinema, with other adult‑rated releases such as Dhurandhar The Revenge, Mirzapur, Cocktail 2, Batwara 1947, O'Romeo, Assi, and Bandar also carrying the ‘A’ certificate.
Fans of Kapoor Khan and Zinta can look forward to seeing these new projects in cinemas, but should be prepared for the adult content warnings that accompany both titles.
