The film, starring Keerthy Suresh in the lead role alongside Sananth and Rishikanth, opened in the Centrepiece section and was met with an enthusiastic standing ovation from the audience at the Scotiabank Theatre.
The moment was captured on video and shared on X, showing the cast and crew—including producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain of Sikhya Entertainment, as well as Jio Studios representatives—walking onto the stage after the credits rolled. The applause that greeted them underscored the film’s impact and the excitement surrounding its global debut.
Subbaraj, who has long carried the project in his mind, described Dorothy as a story rooted in the culture and landscape of Tamil Nadu yet universal in its exploration of friendship, love, identity, caste, masculinity and compassion. He emphasized that the narrative is driven by deeply human characters rather than spectacle, hoping the film’s emotions resonate worldwide.
Ilaiyaraaja’s original score, marking his 1,540th film, lends a legendary musical backdrop to the story. The film is backed by Jio Studios and Sikhya Entertainment, the latter bringing Oscar‑winning partners into the project. Jyoti Deshpande, President of Jio Studios, praised the film’s distinctive cinematic voice and the teaser’s ability to spark curiosity, while Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain highlighted their pride in supporting Subbaraj’s meticulously researched vision.
With its world premiere at TIFF, Dorothy joins the festival’s acclaimed international program—formerly known as Contemporary World Cinema—alongside celebrated filmmakers and highly anticipated premieres from around the globe.
