Cinema VinesPriyadarshan’s 1994 Malayalam classic Thenmavin Kombathu, featuring Mohanlal and Shobana, is returning to the big screen on October 1. The re‑release is being managed by Matinee Now, which has restored the film to a 4K Dolby Atmos format, allowing a new audience to experience the beloved rural romantic comedy in pristine picture and sound.
The story follows Manavalan, played by Mohanlal, a carefree villager whose life takes an unexpected turn when he meets Karthumbi, portrayed by Shobana. What starts as a simple romantic pursuit quickly spirals into a mix of mistaken identities, family disputes and comic mishaps, a blend that helped the film become a major hit in its original run.
In addition to the leads, the film boasts an ensemble of veteran actors such as Nedumudi Venu, Pappu, Sreenivasan, Sukumari, Kaviyoor Ponnamma and KPAC Lalitha, contributing to its lasting appeal. Cinematography was handled by KV Anand, while the soundtrack remains popular even decades later.
Matinee Now’s restoration process involved scanning the original 35mm print in 4K and recreating the music and soundtracks in Dolby Atmos. According to the company, the restoration was carried out without altering the original film, aiming to preserve Priyadarshan’s vision while delivering enhanced visual and audio quality.
Fans of Malayalam cinema can look forward to enjoying Thenmavin Kombathu in its upgraded format starting October 1, marking more than thirty years since the film first graced theatres.
