Over six years the pair maintained a secret weekend affair while working together at Lingmei Advertising in Beijing, a dynamic that kept them emotionally entangled yet painfully stagnant.
Luke’s controlling tendencies and Flora’s own insecurities created a toxic loop. The tension escalated when a junior colleague stole credit for Flora’s work because of family connections, and later the tragic suicide of her best friend forced Flora to confront deep grief and the hollowness of her career and love life. These events pushed her to realize that loving Luke meant risking her own identity and sense of worth.
In a decisive moment, Flora chose to end the relationship, leave Lingmei, and return to her hometown of Harbin. She did not expect Luke to follow or to mend the broken pieces of her life. Instead, she rebuilt from scratch: she purchased a home, launched an event‑management company, and began living on her own terms. The narrative shows Flora finally learning to love herself without the baggage of secrecy and control.
Luke, meanwhile, had to confront his own mistakes and recognize that he could not simply bring Flora back into the same toxic pattern. The series ends with both characters moving forward separately, each having gained a clearer sense of who they are beyond the other’s shadow.
