Cinema VinesMirzapur: The Movie, the cinematic extension of the hit web series, has shattered expectations by crossing the ₹100 crore threshold in just four days. The gangster drama, led by Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal and Shweta Tripathi, has become one of the biggest box‑office successes of the year, a testament to the enduring popularity of the original series and its characters.
Released two weeks ago, the film’s rapid earnings reflect the strong fan base that has grown around the Mirzapur universe. The story, set in 2018, offers an untold chapter from the first season, weaving a narrative of power struggles, betrayal and violence in the lawless city of Mirzapur.
Actor Abhishek Banerjee, who portrayed Compounder in the 2018 inaugural season and now reprises the role in the movie, spoke to PTI about the film’s success. He said, “I was actually bored with the whole idea of people from the industry putting these tags about OTT and Bollywood actors and this and that… I hope that people are observing and understanding that there is no boundary, and anybody can flip any side.” Banerjee, who also served as a casting director for the series, recalled the early challenges of convincing actors that an OTT platform could be a significant platform: “I remember casting for Mirzapur and I remember how difficult it was at that time to communicate to some of the actors that this can be the next big thing. I used to say, ‘Just read the script, if you don’t like the script, say no’. Many actors used to say that, ‘I’m not an actor to be seen on a laptop’, and now everybody wants to be a part of a good web show.”
The film is presented by Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment and directed by Gurmeet Singh. It was written by Puneet Krishna and produced by Ritesh Sidhwani and Farhan Akhtar under the Excel banner, with co‑production by Kassim Jagmagia and Vishal Ramchandani. In addition to the core cast, the movie introduces Jitendra Kumar as Bablu Pandit, replacing Vikrant Massey, and features Ravi Kishan in a new role. Rasika Dugal, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Harshita Shekhar Gaur and Shweta Tripathi reprise their roles from the series.
Mirzapur: The Movie marks the first major film adaptation of the franchise that began as a streaming series in 2018 and evolved into one of India’s most successful OTT properties over three seasons.
