In a groundbreaking fusion of science and song, Indian singer‑composer Joi Barua has teamed up with NASA’s COSI mission to bring the mysteries of the universe to the stage. The collaboration, part of the global orchestral and multimedia project Cosmic Rhapsody, sees Barua crafting two key pieces that echo the astrophysical research conducted by UC Berkeley’s Space Sciences Laboratory, where principal investigator John Tomsick leads the COSI team.
Cosmic Rhapsody was conceived by the storytelling duo Susan Lim and Christina Teenz Tan, with French composer Manu Martin as the chief composer, orchestrator and arranger. Barua, who hails from Assam and has lent his voice to Bollywood hits such as “Agent Vinod,” “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,” and “Munna Bhai M.B.B.S.,” has now added a new dimension to the project by writing the melodies for “Star Among the Cosmic Clouds” and “Confetti Storm.” These songs dramatise a dying star’s explosion and the subsequent return of stardust to Earth, mirroring NASA’s focus on soft gamma‑ray detection and the synthesis of life‑essential elements like iron and aluminium.
During a visit to the Space Sciences Laboratory, Barua and the Cosmic Rhapsody team discovered that the emotional arc of the two songs aligned closely with the scientific narrative of COSI’s mission. “To contribute as an Indian composer to a project partnering with NASA’s COSI mission is humbling,” Barua said. “It sends a message to young dreamers across India that logic and imagination belong together. When you unite science and the performing arts, your canvas becomes the universe itself.”
The immersive experience combines live symphonic scoring, cinematic animation and pop music to tell a fictional story of a human and an AI journeying into space to seek planetary solutions to Earth’s environmental crisis. Barua’s involvement adds a cultural layer, reflecting India’s deep reverence for both the cosmos and music, and highlighting the country’s scientific achievements through ISRO.
John Tomsick praised the artistic interpretation, noting that the songs “born out of pure emotion and poetry” accurately reflect the astrophysics of nucleosynthesis. The partnership illustrates how interdisciplinary collaboration can translate complex scientific concepts into accessible, emotionally resonant art.
