Cinema VinesNithilan Saminathan’s 2024 Tamil thriller Maharaja has not only racked up critical acclaim and box‑office success, it has also become the first Tamil film to be officially announced for a Hollywood remake. The news was confirmed by the film’s producers on social media, who celebrated the milestone as a historic moment for Kollywood, calling it the first Tamil movie to be adapted by a major Hollywood studio.
The original, released in June 2024, starred Vijay Sethupathi and Anurag Kashyap in the lead roles and also featured Sachana Namidass, Natty Subramaniam and Mamta Mohandas. It follows a father who files a complaint about a stolen dustbin named Lakshmi, only for the police to discover that the complaint is a cover for something far more serious. The film earned ₹72.43 crore net in India and grossed ₹199.20 crore worldwide, making it one of the highest‑grossing Tamil releases of the year.
Following its success, particularly its ₹91 crore run in China, an agency approached the producers for remake rights. Sudhan Sundaram, one of the producers, told the Times of India that an A‑list star is lined up for the Hollywood version, which is expected to begin filming next year. While he hinted that Matthew McConaughey could be a candidate, he added that only the agency could confirm the casting.
In addition to the Hollywood adaptation, reports say that Bollywood star Aamir Khan has secured the rights for a Hindi remake of the film. The original is currently streaming on Netflix, and fans are eager to see how the story will translate across languages and markets.
The producers’ announcement sparked excitement among fans, who praised director Nithilan Saminathan and lead actor Vijay Sethupathi for their roles in achieving this international milestone.
