Pankaj Tripathi has publicly praised Mirzapur: The Movie producer Ritesh Sidhwani for choosing not to push the cast into revealing box‑office figures on social media, a practice that has become commonplace in Bollywood’s post‑pandemic era.
The film, a spin‑off of the hit web series, opened last week to a staggering ₹100 crore worldwide in its first weekend. Despite the massive numbers, the actors have largely kept the focus on audience reactions rather than the statistics.
Tripathi, who reprises his popular role as Kaleen Bhaiya, said, “Once the film was released in theatres and the daily numbers started coming in, Ritesh’s approach was remarkable. Even as we crossed milestones, there was zero pressure from his end to project or showcase numbers across social media.” He added that Sidhwani deliberately allowed the movie’s success to spread organically through word‑of‑mouth.
Industry observers note that the film has maintained a steady momentum, earning ₹5.50 crore net in India on its 12th day and bringing its domestic haul to ₹195 crore net (₹233 crore gross). Internationally, it has collected over $5 million, bringing the worldwide total to ₹281 crore as of Tuesday evening. The movie is projected to cross the ₹300‑crore mark in its third weekend.
Mirzapur: The Movie is a joint venture of Amazon MGM Studios and Excel Entertainment, directed by Gurmeet Singh and written by Puneet Krishna. It stars Ali Fazal, Pankaj Tripathi, and Divyenndu, and is set for a theatrical release in Hindi and Telugu on 4 September.
