Lillard said that his decision to reprise his role as Stu Macher was made without fully considering the fallout from the dismissal of fellow cast member Melissa Barrera in 2023. He added that he “didn’t say no” when offered the part, and that he had “not fully considered the implications” of joining the sequel after Barrera’s exit.
Barrera was removed from the film by Spyglass Media Group in November 2023 after she posted on Instagram criticizing Israel’s military actions in Gaza. In her post she called the actions “genocide” and “ethnic cleansing,” and added a Mexican flag logo with the caption “Palestine WILL be free.” Spyglass cited its policy of “zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.” The decision sparked backlash from fans, pro‑Palestinian protesters, and even the director, Christopher Landon, who later left the project.
After Barrera’s removal, other key cast members were affected. Jenna Ortega, who had co‑starred with Barrera in the rebooted films, also exited the project, saying the film was “falling apart.” The film’s February premiere was met with protests outside Paramount Studios, where supporters called for a boycott in Barrera’s name. Similar campaigns followed the release of the trailer in late 2025.
In the screening, Lillard answered a fan’s question about the difficulties actors face when speaking out on political issues. He admitted that he feels bad about his participation in the sequel, saying, “I went back to do Scream, and I got called out. And I was like, ‘…that’s brutal.’ I feel bad about that.” He also acknowledged that Barrera was “on the right side of history,” a statement that has added to the controversy surrounding the film’s production.
The controversy over Barrera’s dismissal has continued to echo through the industry, with other high‑profile incidents such as Macklemore’s firing from an Ed Sheeran concert after using the “Free Palestine” slogan. The debate over political expression in entertainment remains a hot topic, as studios balance creative freedom with public perception and corporate policies.
