Matthew Rhys made headlines by becoming the first male performer to win two lead acting categories in the same year, taking the Lead Actor in a Comedy Series award for "Widow’s Bay" and the Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series for Netflix’s "The Beast in Me." His achievement also makes him the first male actor to earn Emmys in all three lead acting categories, following his 2018 Drama Actor win for "The Americans."
Jean Smart also set a new record, winning Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for "Hacks" for the fifth consecutive season. Her victory tied her with Julia Louis‑Dreyfus, Cloris Leachman and Allison Janney for the most acting Emmys ever, and it marked the first time a performer has won an Emmy for every season of a single show. "Hacks" concluded its five‑season run with Smart’s perfect record intact, even as "Widow’s Bay" claimed the Comedy Series award.
"The Pitt" successfully defended its Outstanding Drama Series title, cementing its status as a mainstay in the drama category.
