Kapila Taneja, who has lived in her home for 24 years, recounted how her in‑laws tried to set her on fire and how she has been separated from her daughter for nearly a quarter of a century.
Kapila opened up in the studio, describing how her love marriage had been an inter‑caste union that led to dowry demands. She said, “My in‑laws tried to set me on fire. I had a love marriage, and it was inter‑caste too. They wanted dowry, but because of me it couldn't happen.” She went on to detail how the harassment escalated once her mother‑in‑law returned home, culminating in the in‑laws pouring kerosene on her and lighting a candle to ignite the flame. “It was winter, so my saree’s pallu and sweater had stuck to my body. Somehow, I managed to remove them and immersed myself in a water tank. I was then taken to the hospital,” she recounted.
Bachchan, who has spent decades as a pillar of Indian cinema, expressed deep empathy. He said, “To say that an injustice has been done would be an understatement. We can only pray that no woman ever has to endure such circumstances or go through an ordeal like this.” He also spoke to Kapila about her daughter, who has not been seen or heard from in 24 years due to her husband and in‑laws forbidding contact. Bachchan offered words of comfort, urging the young woman to remember that a mother’s presence is the most precious and meaningful word for a child.
